The whole point of having a home theater system is to produce the movie theater experience, and if you are a lover of sports programs and DVD movies then having a home theater projector can only enhance that cinema experience at your home.

The problem with projectors is if you have limited space than I would not recommend purchasing a home theater projector. However, assuming you do have the space, one in your home will give you as close to the big screen entertainment as possible.

In today's marketplace there 3 major types of projectors which be:

Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)

Digital Light Processing (DLP)

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

Hardware Streaming

Streaming movies that are downloaded onto a hard drive can eliminate some of the lower picture quality issues that is common with online streaming. The movie or television program will have a pre-determined level of resolution that will make it easier to stream. As with Internet streaming, a viewer can connect the electronic device to the projector HD TV by using compatible cables.

Many consumers are now using an extender that streams content from a home server that maintains their entire movie and program collection, eliminating the need to have a portable hardware source. However, the reliance on a good Internet connection is again an issue.

CRT is a more practical as it has a long projection life - you should expect CRT to last for 20,000 hours and compared to its equivalent which can last between 1,000 to 2,000 hours. It does however take up ample room. If space is limited, LCD may be more sensible choice, as it is compact while DLP is actually not limited to theaters and is sometimes used for movies as well.

Here are some particulars on home theater projectors to look out for:

1. Brightness, depending on your room size, determine the amount of brightness needed for your projector, aim for at least 1,000 ANSI lumens.
2. Color contrast, a contrast ratio of 2,000:1 or higher will provide the best color contrast for your movies.
3. Pixel density, a high native pixel will be most beneficial.

HD projectors for home theater applications are an ideal electronic device for streaming movies from the Internet. Through various technological advancements, consumers are able to purchase, download and stream movies from their laptop or MP3 player right onto their projector HD TV. In order to have the ultimate movie experience, it is important that you obtain the right equipment.

Online Streaming

An HD home theater projector needs to be set up properly in order to deliver exceptional video streaming. Since Internet movies can have a lower picture quality because of the Internet connection, it is important that HD projectors for home theater be utilized. This will positively counteract the common issues that viewers face with online streaming. In order to have the best viewing experience, it is vital that the right cables are used. For instance, HDMI or VGA connections can provide high-quality images. However, in order to use these types of cables, the movie source (laptop or MP3 device) will need to have a compatible port. This also holds true for the projector.

You have all the people straggling in that are late, fumbling around in the dark trying to find their seat, you have the whisperers, the plastic crinklers, the cell phone talkers ... I think you get the point. By the way, I didn't even mention the price of admission. Where I am from,
it costs about $7.50 US Dollars per person. Bring your significant other, kids or whoever else and thow in the cost of snacks ..... This is Big Bucks!

I don't go to the theater anymore, because now I have brought the theater to me. Yes, anytime I want to enjoy the movie experience (without the above aggravations), I simply change into my most comfortable lounging outfit and take the long trip down 13 steps into my gameroom , which I have transformed into a home theater. The advantages are unbelievable. I don't have to drive anywhere, worry about parking, or deal with annoying people anymore. If I need to stop the movie to use the restroom or fix a quick snack, I just pause the movie and go do my thing.Yes, I still need to spend money on movies, but the prices of DVD's have dropped
tremendously and you can find many good deals on used DVD's, which are just as good as a brand new one. Even the cost of a rental is at least half that of a theater ticket.

You can also buy and store music from many online music services and store those on your hard drive server.
Hard drive servers offer advantages over music files stored on a computer as well. Because they function like a traditional audio component, they are easier to use for many people. It is also easier to integrate them with touch screen based home control systems. This will begin to change as the popularity of multimedia PCs such as those running Microsoft XP Media Center Edition 2005 increases.

These units are many steps closer to delivering the long promised "convergence" between consumer electronics and computers. Multimedia PCs, also known as HTPCs [Home Theater PC] function as DVD players, personal video recorders (similar to a TiVO), and hard drive media storage.

They allow storage of digital photos for easy display on your TV or monitor. HTPCs can, of course, browse the net on your TV via your broadband connection. As hard drive storage becomes more economical and compression techniques become better, the storage of HD movies and HDTV programming will become commonplace.

So, have you gone to the movies lately? Let's face it, in this day and age, going to the movies isn't what it's cracked up to be. Recent studies have shown that box office ticket sales have steadily declined over the years and the reason is simple - years ago, if people wanted to see a
movie, they had no other choice other than going to the theater. I don't know about you, but I don't remember the last time I had a pleasant "movie going" experience.

Let's look at what's involved. First, you have to find out the times and the movies that are playing. Next you have to get in the car and drive to the theater giving yourself enough time to park, get your tickets, buy your popcorn, etc. Okay, now your all set and you enter the appropriate theater room and find your seat. The movie begins and here come the
distractions.

What are Home Theater Systems?

For those who are unaware of what home theater systems are, let me be the first to enlighten you. In the day and age of advanced technology, television has not failed to keep up. Where once upon a time you could only enjoy a great movie from the un-comfort of a movie theater, now you have the opportunity to bring the full theatrical experience to your home with these new systems that come complete with a screen, projector and surround sound speakers.

But what exactly are home theater systems? Unlike the movie theater, a home theater system can work within the parameters that you set for it, giving you a more flexible price range to work with when choosing components to create your custom theater. The biggest aspect of your home theater to take into consideration is your surround sound experience. This is because the point of creating a home theater is to get as close to the "real thing" as you can. Movies are produced to give a real feeling of being there, and the sound of cars crashing around you and people screaming from all directions is more realistic than them all coming from in front of you. Home surround sound speakers were created to reflect this sentiment and are a vital part of your home theater experience.

After the surround sound speakers comes the experience of a large picture, which is guaranteed through a projection image that is able to handle large displays without appearing pixilated. Once these components are brought together, your home theater experience can begin.

The audio output system consists a minimum of 2 speakers. The number of speakers can be as high as 11, in addition to the sub-woofer. Sub-woofer is important as it reproduces the bass audio frequencies. Regular floorstanding or bookshelf speakers cannot do this work.

A large HDTV (High Definition Television) forms the video output system. LCD TVs (Liquid Crystal Display Television), Video projectors, plasma TVs, rear-projection TVs, or a traditional CRT TVs are other available options.

Comfortable seats and proper arrangement of all the devices with respect to the seats is also important for that great `cinema experience`. Sound insulation for preventing sound from escaping the room and specialized walls for sound balancing within the room are a part of the higher end systems.

There exist two options for purchasing a home theater system. One can either, purchase and assemble various components, or purchase a system box kit. Assembled systems provide the best combination of components for the consumer`s budget. System in box kits includes a set of speakers, an amplifier or tuner for volume adjustment and video source selection, and at times a DVD player.

What could be better than relaxing at home watching a film, browsing the Internet for sites of interest, listening to your favourite music, watching your favourite TV show either live or recorded from digital High Definition TV or spending a couple of hours whacking your enemy, the Horde, in World of Warcraft. Once upon a time you needed at least half a dozen different expensive items of hardware in your home to do this, but not any more.

It's a truism now to say that readers of newspapers and magazines are down while online based news, reviews and entertainment are up. Even more true its proving far more resilient in these tough and turbulent times than traditional media. Computer entertainment is so engaging and involving. You can immerse yourself in a virtual world of an alternate reality it's no surprise it's proving very attractive and growing an ever larger community.

It is common knowledge that the first home theater speaker system appeared in the middle of the 90s. Nowadays all home theater systems have turned into real multimedia systems. Moreover high-class facilities and rightly planned installation allow the owner of the home theater to confirm that this system makes more of an impression than a big commercial cinema. At the same time everything depends not on the quality of the equipment but also on the accuracy of its set-up, on the size and decoration of the room, on the audience layout and so on.

It is not a secret that for a man who has no training and special knowledge it is very difficult to install home theatre in a right way. Speaking more precise, it is impossible.

Each speaker in a Home Theatre Speaker System serves a very important purpose. The center channel speaker does 50% of the entire job of the speaker system. It delivers most of the dialogue that a person would hear. The front left and right speakers provide the majority of the sound effects. It blends with the video to make it feel more like a movie theater experience. The last speaker is the surround. The surround speaker has the job of providing directional effects. It also enhances sounds like rain or footsteps. Working together, these speakers provide a sound that surrounds the individual thus making the movie watching experience better.

If the subwoofer does not come as a part of the speaker set purchased, then a quality subwoofer should be purchased. The subwoofer is essential to completing the surround sound system. It serves the purpose of providing bass to the sound effects in movies, and improves the sound quality of music, like jazz and classical, when listening through the home theatre. When looking for the best subwoofer always make sure it has at least a 10" or 12" woofer cone, that it is powered, and make sure the dimensions work in the location it has to go.

Do Research

If you decide to shop at some stores locally and ask their employees for advice, be sure they are experts on what you should buy. Sometimes, the workers know less than the consumers. The last thing you want is to take his or her advice and realize that the home theater receiver you bought wasn't the right one.

Researching various receivers before you head out to stores is encouraged as you will not have to rely strictly on customer support. You will also have a better understanding of what to look for and be able to compare prices of certain models to ones online. This will ensure that you not only get a high quality home theater receiver, but also get it at the best price as well.

Brand Harmony

There are many manufacturers that sell a home theater system as an entire package. Of course, you won't get everything like the gaming console and the TV but what you will get are the speakers and media player or AV receiver. This is an example of brand harmony because the manufacturer designed both the speakers and the receiver so you should already know that setting this up will be easy. There might be some packages that are better than others in terms of setup and overall quality so you will have to look for reviews online. This is the easiest method to take because you won't have to worry too much about shopping around for different devices. It is also best that your home cinema package matches the brand of your TV display so you can take advantage of HDMI features where you can control all components using a single remote.

The control interface is also very important. If the receiver is difficult to operate because there are too many confusing menus or buttons, you will quickly become frustrated and will probably not be able to use the receiver to its fully capacity.

Read reviews of the receiver you are interested in and focus on what people say about the ease of use of the interface and how well the remote control unit operates.

Believe me, if you don't get this right, you will definitely regret it so take your time finding a unit with a good interface.

When putting together a sound system for any room, whether its for delivering a massive theater like entertainment system for your television or whether its for purely listening to some good music, a home theater receiver will be a crucial component.

To put it basically, a home theater receiver is what powers your system, and wires your system. It's like the brains and muscles of your surround sound. The receiver is plugged into the wall and the speakers are plugged into the receiver. If using a television the receiver will also be plugged into the television to receiver the sound signal to be sent through the receiver to the speakers.

There are a multitude of things that the home theater receiver can do for you. It sends power to the speakers, tunes in the FM/AM radio stations, lets you switch between audio/video components, and lets you customize the sound output for your own rooms and preferences. Your entire audio/video experience is created from the home theater receiver.

Choosing the receiver

Now we come to the AVR (audio-video receiver) the core element of the home theater system. An AVR or receiver as it is commonly known comprises of an amplifier which serves to control and regulate the audio and video components including the speakers.

With respect to power look for an AVR power rating in the range of 100W x 5 or 100W x 7. Also make sure the receiver has the input points to connect to components like DVD and CD players, PCs, game consoles, portable devices, cameras, Internet and so on. It is recommended to choose an AVR with HDMI inputs which enables better compatibility with new age devices like Blu-ray disc players.

Home Theater Core - Audio and Video Receiver

The centerpiece of the home theater system is the audio and video receiver. Without a doubt, if you build a home system, you are going to need a receiver. The purpose of the receiver is fairly simple. It connects all of your components together and it powers your speakers. It also is usually the main control center of your theater system.

There are tons of brands and manufacturers as well as more features than you can imagine and probably more than you need. When looking for a receiver, make sure it has an ample amount of inputs and a simple control interface.

There are many other functions that are usually offered but these are the most important. You should look at the other components of your home theater and write down what types of connections they use so you will make sure to buy the correct receiver.

You might also want to choose a receiver that has a few more connections then what you currently need so you have some room to grow in the future.

Using Regular PC into a Home Theater PC

If you have an old or unused computer, you might not have to buy a separate HTPC unless you really need the energy and space saving features. All you need to do is check what GPU your home cinema PC is using. If there is a video card inside, example the ports and see if it is possible to hook it up to your display. Older TV models have an S-Video port or D-sub which lets you output video from the computer. However, it is best to use the HDMI port so you can use the TV's speakers without needing an extra cable. If you do not plan to do some hardcore gaming, you can get an inexpensive low-end graphics card with an HDMI port and you are all set. With that graphics card alone, your system should be far more powerful than the average HTPC.

Deciding you budget is the least enjoyable part creating a home theater but it is the easiest. You either have money available or you don't. Although some may argue a home theater adds value to your home, go at this process as a hobby, do not expect to get back anywhere near what you invest. Next split up the budget into categories. A suggestion is to begin with, construction, seating, lighting, video, audio and other. You can also add a Home Theater PC to you list if you want to enter that world. Finally, decide what product types you want, maybe you don't know yet, that is fine just be aware that you will need to spend a considerable amount of your budget on audio, it often goes overlooked. Enjoy the research and make sure you get a good deal, find the products you want, wait for them to go on sale, and make the theater of your dreams

1 - The most important thing to be decided while planning the designing of the room theatre is to select the perfect room for it as there are different preferences by different people, some like to go for living room and some for big halls in their homes. The room theatre should always suit the décor of your room wherever it is placed.

2 - The most important thing to be taken into consideration is the availability of the light. The light should be adjusted in such a manner that the movie can be easily seen and viewers are easily able to get to their seats. However, the intensity of the light should be low when the movie gets started. Additonally, the lighting should not be directly into the eye line of the viewers. The availability of light can be controlled by using a dimmer switch which is very easy to install and use.

3 - The set up of the speakers should be apt and appropriate because a better quality sound results in making the movie more real and original. The sound is the most important part of the home theatre that leaves an unforgettable impression over the audience.

If homeowners like leather style seats without the hassle of leather maintenance or do not have the money to possess the material, synthetic-based bonded leather may be utilized as an alternative. Unlike hefty-priced leather, bonded leather materials quickly wear-in comfortably but maintain their quality for years to come.

While trend, comfort, and style are relevant for a few, there are those individuals who'd rather choose practicality and convenience. Without having to pay a bulk of money, homeowners that do not have the comfort and flexibility of space in their home theaters can instead go for furnishings that offer extreme flexibility and optimum practicality by having built-in hidden storage compartments and drop-down backs that store snacks and anything else a viewer may want.

4 - The next most important factor that affects the designing of the home theatre is the seating. The seating should not be done in a disorganized manner, rather it should always be done in a very systemic orderly way so that no one should feel congested. You should always get the comfortable chairs with wide armrests, sliding footrests, etc. so that no one should feel uneasy while watching movies.

5 - It is recommended that if you are ready to invest a little bit more on your home theatre system, it is good to get a projector screen in order to have a real and original appearance.

6 - The setting of furniture also plays an important role in the designing of the home theatre.

The room design for your home theater or media room is a lot more important than you may think. Sure, you want it to look good, but in order to take full advantage of the investment you have made in home theater equipment, you need to design it to sound good too.

The placement of your speakers, television and furniture all add to your home theater experience. Sure you want comfy chairs and sofas, but if they are too big to situate them properly, your media experience will suffer. You also need to take into consideration where the speakers will be placed. It is ideal to have a center speaker located in front center of where the "audience" will be sitting, a speaker on the front right and front left as well as speakers behind the seating area. As far as visuals go, you want all the seats in the house to have a great view of your TV so you should design the room with these things in mind.

Of course, the best performance can be achieved in pairing the cable with the high-definition media for which it is intended, including not only the HD-compatible television but also the HD satellite or cable receiver and service. The hardware and service may involve additional fees from your cable or satellite provider, but you will immediately see and hear the quality difference.

Toshiba created the Toslink cable in 1983, they connect the TV with the audio/video output. They take advantage of fiber optic technology which transmits light, this provides a signal with no interference from ground, electro-magnetic or radio frequency. It's been used for a while to provide a high quality digital audio for surround sound systems that are Dolby which require the Toslink cable.

In a home theater, the television is going to have the place of prominence. Where is it going to go and what kind of television are you planning to put in there? Think about whether you want your television to be free standing, wall mounted or enclosed in a armoire or TV cabinet. This can go a long way towards shaping your room and helping you make some decisions. Similarly make sure that you know how everyone is going to be seated. Do you want a couch or do you love the idea of cushions or recliners? Some people go so far as to put in raised seating so that everyone will have a lovely view.

You also need to consider your surround sound system. You need to find the right place in the room to place your speakers. A good electronics store with a helpful clerk can be a great way to get some advice.. How is the sound going to go, and where can you mount speakers? With a home theater system, you can create a lovely surround sound effect with some well placed speakers. Whether you are ordering equipment online or in person, do ask about things like free installation. Similarly, make sure that you look into getting the right kind of warranties for your equipment.

Choosing the speakers

Home theaters systems usually come with 5 to 9 speakers. Choose the number of speakers considering the size of the room, sound effect requirements and of course the cost. Before buying a set of speakers, listen to the actual sound produced preferably by playing soundtracks that you are well familiar with. Also remember to buy speakers of the same brand for better compatibility and sound quality.

In a 5 set speaker system, the left and right front speakers as well as the side ones need to be identical to each other. The front speakers are larger in size as they provide more audibility with regards to dialogues spoken and song lyrics while the side speakers are smaller as they provide the subtler sound effects.

Most of us now have high definition televisions that are beyond just watching the picture, they can provide a great sensory experience. To reach this dimension though you have to embrace the newer types of connection cables, more complex than the simple connectors that used to come with components. You need to purchase HDMI, High Definition Multimedia Interface, and Toslink cables to provide the experience your TV is capable of providing you.

HDMI cables connect your television to your cable or satellite receiver through USB connections and transmit uncompressed digital data directly to produce a clearer picture than one you would receive through the traditional coaxial cable. Most modern televisions, whether or not they are plasma or high-definition, are HDMI compatible and will benefit from the direct transfer of digital data provided by the cable.

The room design for your home theater or media room is a lot more important than you may think. Sure, you want it to look good, but in order to take full advantage of the investment you have made in home theater equipment, you need to design it to sound good too.

If you want the full effect of your entertainment system, whether you love epic dramas or romantic comedies, you are going to need to think about how your home theater is set up. While some people are pleased with just a television, other people put a lot more thought into how their theater is set up. If you want to make sure that your family and friends get the best experience possible then you will need to look into how your system is put together.

In the first place, a good home theater is one that works with the space that you have. You may have a room that is perfect for the purpose, or you might find that you need to partition off a space for it. What kind of goals do you have for your space? Do you love the idea of a system where you are going to be able to watch movies just as though you were at the theater or do you find that you need to account for gaming as well? Take some time to plan the layout and to make sure that you are going to be able to fit everything that you want in there. A few planning sketches can go a long way.

Reflections, Absorption
A room full of hard, reflective surfaces will produce an echo-filled, somewhat harsh sound, as opposed to the dullness created by surfaces that are soft and absorptive. Consider a room with every surface made of processed wood, ceramic tile, concrete ceilings and gypsum partitions. This is ideal if you want reflectivity and echo, and not so good for intelligible dialog and full-bandwidth music. Every increase in sound level (decibels) creates additional reverberation and echo. If you were to start out this way and begin to insert soft furnishings and material surfaces, even willy-nilly, you would immediately hear a different as you did so. It should be apparent, then, that adding to this approach some simple math and acoustic principles would successfully balance your sound.

Obviously, optimum results would require that your home theater design balance the surfaces in the room, and this means adding sound absorption. You achieve this by stopping the noise reflections and controlling the reverberation. You would use upholstered furniture, acoustic panels, mounted and freestanding soundboards and carpets to accomplish this. Of course, balance means more than just having both hard and soft surfaces in the room, it has a great deal to do with positioning with regard to speaker placement. A pleasing overall home theater sound results from a combination of surfaces, positions, absorption and reflection.

If you are in need of a top notch home theater room design, you will definitely want to consider hiring a professional. There are hundreds of these professionals just waiting for your business. All you have to do is locate one in your area, and then tell them what you need. In no time at all, you will have a customized home theater that all of your guests will envy.

Rules of thumb

These general rules will help, but every room and sound system is a unique combination of various elements. Start with the general and move carefully to more and more specific treatments of your room. If you are not comfortable making standing wave calculations or balancing acoustic elements, by all means get some help. The more you are spending on your system, the more you owe it to yourself (and the family) to make sure it is done right. Now, some tips:

• Carpeting is especially important between the front speakers and the listeners, as it catches the first reflective sounds.
• Acoustical wall paneling and/or curtains near to the front speakers also help.
• Do not paint acoustic panels, as it reduces its effectiveness by making it more reflective.
• Soft furnishings (sofas, cushions) contribute to echo absorption.
• Typically, the ceiling should be a hard surface so it can carry sound from front to back and diffuse the surround signals around the room.
• The average home theater design should have at least 35% of the total room surface area absorptive (floor, wall and ceiling area), and most absorptive surfaces should be in the front half of the theater.
• With the rear of your room having more reflective surfaces, sound diffuses better (again, the surround signals, especially) from the rear speakers.

Even though you do not need a professional to help you design your home theater, you may be better off getting their help; at least during the beginning stages. Many people that try to design their own home theater end up wasting a lot of money on things that they do not need, or things that they could have found somewhere else for less money. When you are working with a professional interior designer, they will supply you with a couple of different ideas, and then you can work with them in order to ensure that you get exactly what you want. The only downside to hiring a professional is that you have to pay for their services. But even though you may have to put out a bit of extra money, you will be ensured of getting a room that is professionally designed.

Of course the division isn't cut and dry. The serious episodes feature plenty of the romantic complications and incidental nudity that wax supreme in the jiggle episodes and the jiggle episodes contain germs of substance that often become foundations for the (more) serious episodes.

Once again a dark figure emerges from Kenshin's past to seek vengeance on the reformed manslayer, but this one is special. He is Enichi Yukishiro, brother of Tomoe Himura, the wife Kenshin slew with his own hands. Kidnapping Kaoru, Enichi lures Kenshin to a secluded island where he plans to deliver "Jinchuu", or mortal revenge, to Kenshin. If the guilt in Kenshin's conscience doesn't prove his undoing, Enichi's specially-developed Anti-Hiten-Mitsurugi Technique surely will. But Kaoru's (or is it Tomoe's?) love proves stronger than the hatred in Enichi's soul.

But as a rule of thumb it works, and its effect is undeniable: the show is absolutely infuriating. Just when you're ready to be seduced by its premise, reveling in the dark humor and inherent power of its tale of a man fighting a fate that is neither as evil nor as ill-suited to his personality as he thinks, the series will drown itself in boob-peddling nonsense.

Several years later: After passing on the reverse-blade sword to Yahiko, Kenshin decides to aid the sick and afflicted of Japan, a noble choice that unfortunately leads to both Kenshin and Kaoru contracting an incurable disease. To make matters worse, Kenshin still has yet to return from his mission on the mainland. As Kaoru lies ill, Sanosuke searches the Chinese coast for the missing Kenshin, while Yahiko heads for Seijuro Hiko's to bring Kenji home to his estranged mother.

One minute it's forcing Akuto to decide between saving a friend and denying his burgeoning Demon-Lord-hood, the next it's locking him in a cell with a horny android and a naked girl. Discussions of discrimination via precognition alternate with gags about penis size, and gooey puppy-love vies for screen time with frightening shifts in Akuto's personality. The urge to throw crap at your screen, in other words, is acute.

The epic Rurouni Kenshin saga is brought to a definitive conclusion with part two of "Seisouhen", which is a slight improvement over part one's confused flashbacks but still has a patchwork, thrown-together feel. The animation continues the Samurai X tradition of being absolutely mind-blowing, but the story only seems to be half there, and it's ultimately so grim and depressing it's almost too pathetic to watch.

And yet, somehow it keeps you watching. Part of that is because the naughty gags and romantic misunderstandings, for all their irritating dilutionary properties, are reasonably amusing. Part of it is because the series never takes itself too seriously, making it fun to watch even when it's dumb or vulgar (director Takashi Watanabe was the guy behind The Slayers after all). And partly—let's be honest now—it's because the fan-service is really, really good.

It's as if the creators' felt bound to duplicate the dark feeling of the first OVA series, neglecting the fact that that series took place in Kenshin's turbulent past as opposed to his (supposedly) sunnier future. It's strange to see the Rurouni Kenshin cast in such an unrelentingly dour light. Tomoe was conceived as a tragic figure from the start; Kaoru, Sanosuke, and Yahiko were conceived as players in a more lighthearted tale. Turning Kenshin's future so gloomy undermines the ideas of redemption and rebirth that were at the heart of the entire Rurouni Kenshin story.

The girls are cute, voluptuous, and of course frequently naked—a combination not to be underestimated, particularly when it's so darned good-natured. And bouncily well-animated. It takes an underappreciated level of skill to master the confluence of character design and animation that makes fan-service work. Give Ichiban Ushiro its due; it has that confluence down pat—even with its pervasive "paste a face over it" censorship.

The first act foolishly attempts to condense the 2000-page "Revenge Arc" of the manga into about fifteen minutes. Needless to say most of the story is completely cut, including the single most dramatic and gripping moment in the entire Rurouni Kenshin canon (readers of the manga know of what I speak), as well as the return of such popular supporting characters as Saito, Aoshi, and Misao. Even Sanosuke and Yahiko have been inexplicably written out, and the grand Kenshin adventure that rivaled the "Kyoto Arc" in terms of scope has been reduced to a single battle between Kenshin and Enichi with Kaoru on the sidelines.

Music runs a wide range throughout these episodes, from lighthearted pop tracks to more serious instrumental pieces during the show's most dramatic moments. Solo piano ballads set the right mood for Masane's grief over losing Riko, and a string ensemble provides the bittersweet background when she learns about her forgotten past. The pleasant chords of the ending song also help to reset emotional equilibrium after each episode, but there's just no forgiving the new opening theme that plays from Episode 14 onwards—this aural monstrosity features ridiculous English lyrics and a sound that doesn't fit the series' action/sci-fi feel at all.

Despite the negative aspects of the series, the first volume is still very enjoyable as a whole. The storyline itself is the major winning factor that gives the series the drive to make viewers interested continually in the next episode. While the various artistic aspects of the series can be seen as slightly on the average side, the overall effect of the series is one of cheer and happiness. In fact, even the most crusted anime fan would have a hard time not chuckling at least once throughout the volume.

The English dub is competently done on this round of episodes, especially with the high number of emotionally charged scenes. During certain quiet moments, the characters deliver their lines almost too slowly and deliberately—perhaps to match the mouthflaps?—but the emotion and feeling is always there. More fast-paced dialogue turns out fine, though, especially with Maria's rampage in Episode 15—if any aspiring voice actor wants to hear how an epic meltdown is done, just check out that episode. The dub script tends to wander loosely from the subtitle translations, but essential lines of dialogue never lose their meaning, even though the Japanese and English words may differ.

While the English script was translated superbly, and was well acted out by the dub actors in a technical sense, the voices somehow sounded very condescending, and reminiscent of a children's educational cartoon. Perhaps it was because of the childlike nature of the series and characters, but some of the actors took on an almost patronizing tone of voice, giving the overall dub performance a hokey feeling that is almost unbearable.

If four episodes of Witchblade just isn't enough, there's a healthy dose of extras on this disc, with a 17-minute featurette on the background of the original Witchblade comic and an interview with voice actress Mie Sonozaki (who plays Reina in the series). However, the interview does contain spoilers, so it's best watched after the main content. Other goodies include textless opening and ending sequences, and an insert booklet containing production art and an interview with conceptual designer Shinya Ogura.

The dialogue tracks were also done well. The subtitled track was done especially nicely, that even though the translations didn't translate anything said by background cameo figures, the main characters received large, well-timed subtitles that were easy to read. The Japanese voicing cast did a good job with the series, including the fairy dinosaurs that accompany Miho, whose voices were cute almost beyond belief.

There may have been a time when the Witchblade anime was only about torpedo-chested women battling it out, but that time is now gone, as this set of episodes takes a deeper, more introspective turn. The relationship between Masane and Riko is tested to its limit here, and indeed, the whole idea of mothers and daughters is explored in the climactic episode—with bittersweet results. After such dramatic heights, the filler-ish beach episode is a bit of a letdown, and it would be nice if we could just wish away the horrid second opening theme. Despite those weaknesses, however, these episodes still leave a strong impression—especially since few things are as strong as the power of parental love.

The opening theme is very cute, and is rivaled in its ability to cheer up viewers only by the image song sung by LaLa near the end of the first volume. The sugary J-Pop and the overall pop culture sensation around the series makes the vocal tracks carry on the musical integrity of the series. While the vocals are anything but artistic or profound, they are sure to find a comfortable place among the hearts of fans across the country.

An interesting aspect about the series is the character design. Whereas all of the female characters are drawn carefully, with well-thought out outfits, and expressive eyes, many of the male characters seem more crudely drawn, with bland clothing, and haphazardly drawn eyes. While this doesn't effect the enjoyment of the series in any way, it's something amusing to take note of while watching the series.

Sai Akuto wants very badly to be a nice guy. And by most measures he is. He obeys the law, is kind and equitable, and aspires to be a High Priest, the holiest and most austere of occupations. To this end he transfers to the Constant Academy for Magical Arts, a vocational school for magic users. All is going swimmingly—including a budding friendship with the student body's most upstanding girl—when the school's purportedly infallible oracle proclaims his future occupation as "Demon Lord." And everything goes promptly to hell.

Miho is a character who, though not easily identifiable to viewers, slips easily into the mahou shoujo protagonist role. Refreshingly, the episodes follow a linear story scheme, making them much more exciting to watch than the usual generic cyclic approach taken by other magical girl shows. Each episode follows directly after the last, so viewers won't be bored with any recurring story patterns.

Animation and visuals are reasonably polished in this set of episodes, although the quality varies depending on the complexity of the scene. Critical moments—like the Cloneblade battle in Episode 15 or the split-second where Masane takes off her shirt at the beach—are handled with high framerates and plenty of detail, while lesser scenes like a casual conversation at the café are dialed down to merely adequate levels.

There are also attempts to make the story more intriguing and mysterious by putting in dream sequences and a character whom Bandai has uncreatively tagged the “Mystery Man.” Although the addition of this background mysterious edge contributes to the greater story arc, and gives the story more depth, it is introduced in a somewhat awkward manner that makes it seem out of place. Instead of presenting it so that it blends in with the events of the series, the scenes are randomly placed within the episodes, or abruptly woven into the conversations, making it seem more like an afterthought placed by a producer who wanted to give the series more bite. Other than that, the episodes are very cute and fun to watch.

Life hasn't been the same for Masane Amaha ever since she discovered that she has the power of the Witchblade, an ancient weapon that brings its user great power—as well as great conflict. Masane's troubles continue when she finds out that her daughter Riko isn't actually related to her, and her biological mother comes to take her away. But family relationships are rarely built on DNA alone, and Riko's "real" and "fake" mothers are put to the test when a Neo-gene (a genetically engineered specimen designed to imitate the capabilities of the Witchblade) goes on the rampage. Meanwhile, some startling truths are revealed about the Neo-gene project and the nature of the Witchblade, and Masane realizes that she must protect Riko more carefully than ever.

The episodes contained on this disc are very typical of the series as a whole. There are a few fairy-tale style stories, a bunch of strange demons, and so on and so forth. They recycle the "Osuwari!" (sit!) gag a few hundred times. There's very little in the way of extras: a line art gallery, and nothing more. It's hard to recommend this disc to anyone who isn't either a diehard Takahashi fan or already obsessed with Inuyasha. There are better monster-of-the-week shows out there.

Describing the premise of Witchblade is easy. It's about hot women, with ridiculous boobs, fighting each other with wacky out-of-this-world weapons. Right? But then along comes Volume 4 of the series, which pretty much throws that superficial misconception in the trash. These episodes do have the usual well-endowed beauties and frenzied fights if that's what you're looking for, but there's also drama and emotional weight to be found here. The link between mother and daughter is questioned and tested; a long-hidden past is revealed; a disturbing discovery puts the concept of genetic engineering in a whole new light. In fact, the most striking thing about this volume might be how little of it actually involves any physical battle.

To top it off, his sidekick, an obnoxious little green frog-looking guy, is given a LOT of dialogue, which means the viewer is forced to sit through minutes upon minutes of his raspy-tongued oral diarrhea. The Japanese voice for this character is intolerable, and the English one manages to make it worse; do yourself a favor and just hit mute whenever he appears on screen.

Instead, this disc opens with a battle of the moral variety in Episode 13: Masane's fight to keep her child. Of course, that relationship has always been a central theme of the series, but to see it threatened to the point of separation is something new—and it's what makes the plot gears turn for the next few episodes. The conflict in Riko's heart is evident throughout this set of episodes, although the contrast between the coldness of Riko's new mom and the joyful warmth of Masane is overplayed (it's pretty obvious who the right choice is). The most dramatic twist, however, comes in Episode 15 when Masane's computer-sneaking buddies discover where the Neo-gene "sisters" really come from—a twist that connects the series' sci-fi aspect into the more drama-oriented Riko subplot.

This volume introduces the cold and distant Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha's brother who hates anything bipedal that calls itself human. The second this character appeared in the anime, they had to reinforce the Hoover Dam to prevent gallons of fangirl drool from flooding the American southwest. He figures in heavily in the anime series and appears in countless episodes, and this volume is his first appearance, so that'll make it a big deal for anyone obsessed with mink stole-wearing dudes with Sailor Moon symbols on their foreheads. Personally, I found the character off-putting and downright uninteresting.

Because of that convergence of storylines, most would agree that Episode 15 is the highlight of this disc: shocking plot points, running for one's life, an intense one-on-one battle, and a deeply emotional finish that gets the pacing and tone just right. It's in this episode that the theme of "mothers and daughters" is brought to its apex: not just for the drama between Masane and Riko, but also for the other mother and daughter characters who meet a less favorable end. By comparison, the last episode on the disc is pretty much a time-waster—in an anime with so many busty women, you just have to squeeze in a beach episode somewhere. It's a refreshing break from the seriousness of the previous story arc, but let's not kid ourselves here: it's basically an excuse to see Masane in a bikini about two sizes too small, and nothing more.

Normally, the best way to sell a spinoff product is to say that it'll appeal to the hardest of hardcore fans—but in the case of Negima!? neo, it's probably hardcore fans who will be most offended by it, seeing as it defangs and cripples everything that was good about the source material. With a mindless re-enactment of the premise (although it does squeeze in an original chapter), the dumbing-down of the first major story arc, and dilution of the art into a generic action-adventure style, this is probably the one thing that Negima completists can skip.

Looking over these 190 pages as a whole, Volume 3 of Nura doesn't offer much in the way of major plot points, unless you count Rikuo officially accepting his role as successor (just a formality, really) and the clan's next major threat making his debut (but only going up against the supporting cast so far). Despite the lack of dramatics, however, there's still enough material to keep readers interested, whether it's the moral complexities of Gyuki's situation, or discovering the wonders of the alternate yokai universe, or seeing the supporting cast wield their talents.

Rumiko Takahashi has a long history of writing series that run forever and feature bitchy girls smacking around incompetent guys. The newest version of this storyline is Inuyasha, a series enjoying incredible success in both America and Japan. I'm not sure what it is about Inuyasha that fails to entertain me; perhaps it's the repetitiveness or the complete lack of likable characters. Either way, Inuyasha just isn't doing it for me.

These may be diversions at best, but they're passable diversions. Unfortunately, this potpourri of story ideas is thoroughly let down by the art, which often goes overboard with fancy details and splashy effects in an attempt to impress the reader. What would be really impressive is if Hiroshi Shiibashi learned to hold back and put the pen down once in a while. With better visual discipline and a deeper storyline, perhaps the saga of this yokai clan would truly begin to rise.

That's not to say the series is completely devoid of quality. The animation is handled by Sunrise, who is no slouch when it comes to fluid and consistent character animation. The colors are vibrant, and the music isn't half bad, either, invoking a calm balance between archaic and modern styles to fit with the theme of the series. Indeed, the problem with this series is twofold: one, the plot moves along about as quickly as a snail that's been buried beneath six feet of concrete, and two, it follows a very tired yoma-of-the-week formula that gets old very, very quickly.

Fancy Lala tells the tale of a young girl named Miho who dreams of becoming a comic artist so she can live the life of the famous. One day, she meets two fairies who give her a magic pen, which allows her to transform into Lala, a fifteen year old version of herself who is soon turned into a star by a small modeling agency. Miho must now deal with the intricacies of living a double life as both herself and as Lala.

Some people claim to like the character designs for this series, but they lack the charm of Takahaski's other efforts. All the women look the same: rail thin with long black or brown hair. The costuming is similarly uninspired, with a whole lot of shrine maiden outfits and traditional Japanese priests and so forth running around. The show just isn't very interesting to look at--at least not as much as Urusei Yatsura was. Some people really enjoy the Inuyasha aesthetic. I am not one of those people. It's just too generic.

The first volume of Fancy Lala kicks off with a fantastic start, combining the shoujo genre with originality that is able to hook viewers. Released by Bandai, the first DVD contains five episodes, which is a very good deal for those who are financially strained. Just having five episodes available with the first volume alleviates any disappointment about the lack of any extras on the disc. The physical packaging of the series follows the standard format of DVD slipcase with insert, but has an odd quirk about it.

Pray you don't get tired of seeing some demon steal a piece of the Shikon no Tama and run off with it only to later fight with and lose to Inuyasha, since that's the basic story of nearly every episode. To top it off, Viz has elected to release this series three episodes at a time. Consider that episode 105 just aired in Japan, and you're looking at purchasing 35 DVDs just to get to where they are now. At $24.99 per disc, you'll be spending nearly 900 dollars to basically see the same thing happen 105 times.

With the series' heavy emphasis on traditional yokai legends, it's no suprise that this translation leaves a number of folklore-specific words in Japanese. What is a surprise, however—and not a pleasant one—is how many of those words are left unexplained. In the heat of battle, it's hard to tell whether a character is calling out their own particular technique, or referring to an charm or ritual in general. How is anyone supposed to know what a "shikigami reitei" is? It's the translator's job to tell us, not just leave words in there to sound cool and mysterious.

Of course, this being a re-telling, the series tries to accelerate the pace of development by jumping straight into the Evangeline arc, and ending it a lot quicker as well. The results are, in short, disastrous. The whole point of the original Evangeline arc was to take that first step toward action-adventure greatness, to pit Negi against a challenging opponent and force him to stretch his abilities. By comparison, this interpretation tosses it off as a generic "hero defeats his first villain" battle, with a namby-pamby finale where everyone holds hands and becomes friends because Negi showed Evangeline the power of love.

Fight scenes become so crammed with detail, from speedlines to smoke clouds to creature transformations, that the focus of the action is often lost. Thankfully there are occasional interludes of Rikuo's school and home life, but these just end up revealing how ordinary the human character designs are. It's hard to imagine a pair of short-haired schoolgirls more plain-faced than Kana and Yura. Clearly, the yokai battle action is where the fun's at—if only the artist could learn to rein it in a bit.

Come on, what happened to the complex relationship of a teacher and student as rivals? And for those who aren't comparing against the original, the fight will seem even more useless, as it does little else besides introduce the Pactio Card system—which in this series looks more like a merchandising tool than actual wizardry.

However, coming up with interesting scenarios and connecting them together is only part of the job. Next comes the task of actually drawing those scenarios, and that's where Nura gets all tangled up. When it comes to illustrating the mysterious creatures and locales of the yokai world, Shiibashi shows great talent, emulating traditional Japanese art right down to the curving brushstrokes. But ask him to string those beautiful drawings together to create an actual manga, and ... well, it just looks like a bunch of beautiful drawings strung together, without the coherence of a proper story.

Aside from the prequel chapter, this work's only other advantage over its predecessor is that the artwork is more readable—as a monthly series it doesn't suffer from the same 18-page-a-week cramfests that the Negima manga has become notoroius for. If anything, the layouts are almost too conventional: squares and rectangles typically arranged in two or three rows, with action scenes that fail to break out of the mold. The character designs also adhere slavishly to the originals, and aside from a more youthful look and slightly different battle costumes, it's hard to spot anything distinctive about the characters.

Yura's battle in the last three chapters is more substantial, at least: her onmyodo skills give rise to some impressive creature-summoning moments, and the fact that she can stand up for herself naturally makes her more compelling. The other combatants also prove to be relevant to the series at large: Rikuo's grandpa reveals one of his own impressive techniques for the first time, and wind-wielding villain Muchi figures to be a key player since his goal is to take down the entire clan. In that way, even side-character escapades can turn out to have major ties to the main plotline.

Also falling into the "don't really care what it looks like" category are the backgrounds, which typically range from generic high school scenery to generic battle scenery to generic interiors. Adding to that dullness is the overuse of tones to gray out almost everything in sight. And as for the claim that Negima!? in general is supposed to contain less fanservice than the original—well, what do you make of Negi still sneezing girls' clothes off, as well as a nude prepubescent girl in one of the climactic scenes?

By comparison, the side-character arcs are shallower but still entertaining. Kana's encounter with a yokai trying to kidnap her is has its thrills, beginning with a pursuit through the school halls and ending with a fanciful visit to the yokai realm. But her passive damsel-in-distress nature, and a painfully clichéd conclusion when she asks Rikuo about his yokai alter ego, make this a mindless confection in the end.

An added bonus of the more spacious layouts is that the dialogue also avoids any overcrowding. In fact, the text reads pretty smoothly throughout—which is a nice way of saying that the script is identical every other boys' adventure series ever. Battle taunts, comedy quips, brief explanations of how magic works, and incantations in Latin: there's nothing new to be found here.

Negi rushes to school, annoys Asuna right off the bat, and tries to establish his authority (which is hard to do when all the girls are fawning over how cute he is)—yes, if you've read the original, you've already read the start of this series as well. All it does is serve as a reminder of how unimpressive Negima was at the beginning and how it took many, many chapters for things to develop.

Rikuo Nura is the twelve-year-old grandson of Nurarihyon, the great yokai overlord. This makes him the heir to an empire of yokai, demons and spirits stretching across Japan. However, Rikuo's other grandparents are all human, making him only 1/4 yokai! As a result, he can only use his full spiritual powers a quarter of the time, and is reluctant to become the Nura clan's future leader.

The one bright spot in this story is found right at the beginning, with the entirely original "Chapter Zero," a prequel piece that fills in the blanks about how Negi graduated from magic school. As an action-packed magical combat showcase, it does a fine job of drawing the reader into the series ... only to pull a nasty bait-and-switch when things quickly revert to mediocre with the actual first chapter.

Rikuo's combat skills are put to the test when Gyuki, a sub-leader among the clan, turns against him and tries to end the Nura bloodline in violent fashion. After the battle, an even greater test awaits when Rikuo has to judge how Gyuki is to be punished. Meanwhile, other threats emerge when Rikuo's schoolmate Kana is abducted by a malicious mirror-dwelling spirit, and onmyoji-in-training Yura faces off against a wind yokai who wants to take down the entire clan.

What's also true is that the resulting anime adaptation fell so far short of the original that they decided to give it another go with the exclamatory Negima!? anime, taking on a totally different storyline that could be told in the space of 26 episodes. And that's where the Negima!? neo manga adaptation comes in, making it essentially a copy of a copy of a copy.

It would be terribly boring if Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan became nothing more than an endless sequence of fights, with our hero disposing of different spirits every week. So give Hiroshi Shiibashi some credit for not sending Rikuo Nura up an escalator of tougher and tougher opponents. The first few chapters make it seem that way at first—oh no, here comes a big bad villain! Commence hand-to-hand combat!—but the rest of the book is about expanding the world of Nura through its side characters.
